@langchain-ai Updated 2026-10-28

Guide for creating effective skills that extend agent capabilities with specialized knowledge, workflows, or tool integrations. Use this skill when the user asks to: (1) create a new skill, (2) make a skill, (3) build a skill, (4) set up a skill, (5) initialize a skill, (6) scaffold a skill, (7) update or modify an existing skill, (8) validate a skill, (9) learn about skill structure, (10) understand how skills work, or (11) get guidance on skill design patterns. Trigger on phrases like "create a skill", "new skill", "make a skill", "skill for X", "how do I create a skill", or "help me build a skill".

Install

With your agent

Install OMGSkills skill "langchain-ai/deepagents:libs/code/deepagents_code/built_in_skills/skill-creator" into this agent's normal skills directory: call the OMGSkills MCP get_install_plan tool for your agent and run the script it returns (it installs only the pinned commit and verifies SKILL.md), and stop if MCP or the pin is unavailable. Do not overwrite or change existing skills without asking me.

Manual command

git clone https://github.com/langchain-ai/deepagents /tmp/deepagents && ln -s /tmp/deepagents/libs/code/deepagents_code/built_in_skills/skill-creator ~/.claude/skills/skill-creator

From README

Skill Creator Skill Location for Deep Agents Code Deep Agents Code loads skills from five sources, listed here from lowest to highest precedence: | # | Directory | Scope | Notes | |---|-----------|-------|-------| | 0 | /builtinskills/ | Built-in | Ships with Deep Agents Code | | 1 | $DEEPAGENTSHOME/ /skills/ | User (deepagents alias) | Default for dcode skills create | | 2 | /.agents/skills/ | User | Shared across agent tools | | 3 | .deepagents/skills/ | Project (deepagents alias) | Default for dcode skills create --project | | 4 | .agents/skills/ | Project | Shared across agent tools | is the agent configuration name (default: agent). When two directories contain a skill with the same name, the higher-precedence version wins — project skills override user skills, and any user or project skill overrides built-in skills. Example directory layout: Core Principles Concise is Key The context window is a public good.
